The City of Petersburg, located on the Appomattox River, is 23 miles south of Virginia's state capital, Richmond, and is at the juncture of Interstates 95 and 85. Founded and settled by English colonists in 1635, Petersburg is a long-time industrial center and transportation hub for the Commonwealth. As of July 1, 2014, the city’s population was 32,421.
Petersburg has been investing heavily in the preservation of its numerous 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century structures in its historic neighborhoods. The Petersburg Old Town Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
